Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is in Greek called gaidouragkatho, koufagkatho, agkavato or silibo. Parts used are seeds. The mature heads of the plant are collected and stored in a hot place. After a few days, seeds are removed. Seeds contain flavones, essential oil, bitter principle and mucilage. They stimulate bile flow. It can therefore be used against all problems related to the gall-bladder. It also increases milk flow and it is totally safe for the women during lactation.
Seeds are prepared as an infusion. Add a teaspoonful of dry seeds in a cup of boiling water and let it infuse for 10-15 minutes. Filter and drink 3 times per day. Daily dosage for a tincture is 1-2 ml three times a day.
