Product Description

Purple passion flower (Passiflora incarnata) is also known as true passion flower, maypop, wild apricot and wild passion vine. It is a perennial vine with woody stem and is native to the southern region of USA. Leaves are trilobed with two glands on the top. Bluish-white flowers with five petals appear in the summer and fruits are yellow oblong berries about 5cm long and are edible. They are rich in flavonoids and have diuretic and tonic properties. Parts used medicinally are dried leaves.

In Indian folk medicine, passion flower was used as a painkiller and a tonic agent. The herb contains alkaloids (passiflorine, harmine and harmole), glycosides, flavonoids and sterols. It is sedative, soporific, antispasmodic and analgesic. It is considered an important remedy for insomnia as it brings a peaceful sleep without narcotic effect. As an antispasmodic, it can be used for Parkinson disease, crises and hysteria. It is very effective for nervous pains, such as neuralgia and viral nervous infection, and shingles. It can also be used fro asthma with spasms. For insomnia, it is well-combined with valerian and hop.

Passion flower extract or tincture is suitable for adults especially for nervous pains. Remedy is prepared as an infusion by adding one cup of boiling water onto 1 teaspoonful of herb. Infusion time is 10-15minutes. Filter and drink one cup at night before sleep to treat insomnia. For other cases, drink one cup twice per day.
